Tracing Early Cannabis Discourse in the United States through Chronicling America

Dataset and Source: Digital newspaper collections on the use, history, and cultural impact of marijuana/cannabis from the Library of Congress Chronicling America database 
Status: In Progress
Goals and/or Outcomes: Use topic modeling and vector space modeling to track the discourse on marijuana/cannabis. Respond to, complicate, and subvert traditional narrative of "Mexican hypothesis" as explanation for the emergence of recreational marijuana use and subsequent demonization of the practice in the United States.
