Identifying Nonprofits using Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Department: A&S Philosophy/LCoB Economics
Researcher: Zvi Biener, PhD & Michael Jones, PhD
Dataset and Source: Nonprofit mission statements, financial data, and geographic information collected from nonprofit websites and 990 tax forms
Status: In Progress

Goals: How can we identify those essential nonprofit organizations that serve our communities. COVID-19 has caused an economic crisis for nonprofit organizations, affecting their revenue and, as a result, the services that they can provide to clients in need as well as the staff they can employ. Using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to identify essential nonprofit organizations based on their own mission statements so that government organizations can identify the number of essential nonprofit organizations as well as the potential value that a financial stimulus might need to be in order to maintain their operations.
